IT Leaders
Roundtable:
The Tao of Everest: Personal Inspiration and Practical Leadership from the Top of the World
The presenter for this discussion is Ian Woodall.
As the first rays of dawn crept across the Tibetan plateau, Ian Woodall stepped onto the summit of Mount Everest and into history, one of the few to climb the world’s highest mountain by both its south and north sides. However, his climbs have not been without tragedy. During his first ascent from the south Ian’s team were trapped at 26,000 feet in the worst storm in Everest history which claimed the lives of five fellow climbers, yet his team persevered and reached the summit as the only climbers left on the mountain. Two years later, he was forced to leave a dying climber whose first words were, “Don’t leave me.” Yet ultimately Ian had to leave her to secure the safety of his own team. Nine years later, in May 2007, Ian returned to nearly 28,000 feet to bury the woman he had been forced to leave behind.
Now, using the power of emotional storytelling, Ian brings the triumphs and tragedies of climbing Mount Everest directly to his audience, showing how the insights gained on the mountain can enhance everyone’s Personal Inspiration and Practical Leadership skills through focus on:
- Concentrate on Can-Do’s: In any given situation one should resist the natural inclination to prevaricate and do nothing, and should endeavour to take ownership of the problem by concentrating on what can be done, however limited, and not allow oneself to be overwhelmed by all those things which can’t be done. “Sometimes we may not be the best person for the job, but we may be the only person for the job.”
- Make Mandela Moments: The principal of reaching out and recognizing the efforts of others irrelevant of whether those efforts are necessarily successful or not.
- Invest In Integrity: Personal integrity is the basis of all leadership. “Integrity is what we do when no-one is watching.
Before embarking on his Everest expeditions, Ian worked as a schoolteacher, a catering manager, an internal auditor, as well as serving as an officer in the British Army.
Technical
Roundtable: The Push for "Green IT" and Its Impact on the Audit Profession - Thomas Tierney
All around us, we see the push to “go green” – from the products we select to changes in lifestyle. Corporations, as well, are under pressure to behave more sustainably, under pressure from employees, customers, and shareholders. These pressures arise from a need to minimize environmental impacts and manage risk associated with climate change. As companies struggle to respond, many changes will be made, particularly in the area of Information Technology. Come learn what changes to expect now and in the future and discuss how they will impact audit processes.
Thomas Tierney is an Information Security and Controls Expert who has worked in a variety of industries including insurance, agribusiness, professional services, travel & hospitality, retail and high tech. Tom has extensive experience in the Energy industry and in Environmental, Health, and Safety, particularly in the field of performance and risk management. With a broad background in engineering, information technology and management consulting, Tom is able to architect comprehensive environmental solutions from a holistic point of view. Tom has a Bachelor of Science degree in Aeronautics and Astronautics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is a Certified Information Systems Auditor (CISA) and LEED Accredited Professional.
